Medicaid / CHIP Perinatal Program |
Medicaid / CHIP Perinatal Program Summary
- Expands CHIP coverage to unborn children of pregnant women who are ineligible for Medicaid due to:
- Income (income is greater than the 185% FPL, but at or below 200%); or
- Immigration Status (and whose income is at or below 200% FPL).
- Key Components
- 12-month continuous eligibility period for unborn children.
- Exempt from 90-day waiting period
- Exempt from CHIP asset test and all cost-sharing.
- Parent/guardian would have the right to file a Medicaid application
- A renewal application will be mailed in the 10th month of coverage.
- Benefits
- Includes prenatal and postpartum care similar to the prenatal and postpartum benefits offered through Medicaid.
- Includes one visit every four weeks for the first 28 weeks of pregnancy,
one visit every two to three weeks from 28 to 36 weeks of pregnancy and
one visit per week from 36 weeks to delivery.Limit 20 prenatal visits and
2 postpartum visits. Additional visits allowed if medically necessary.
- Pharmacy, limited laboratory testing, assessments, planning services
and education and counseling.
- Inpatient services excluded for unborn children and women between 0
and 185 percent FPL
Inpatient services limited to labor and delivery for unborn children and
women above 185 percent FPL
- Full CHIP benefit for the child after birth.

with Special Health Care Needs Services Program - website |
| The Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN)
Services Program provides services to children with
extraordinary medical needs, disabilities, and chronic
health conditions. The CSHCN Services Program's
health care benefits include payments for medical
care, family support services , and related services
not covered by Medicaid, CHIP, private insurance,
or other “third party payors.” The program
also contracts with agencies throughout the state
to provide an array of clinical and support services
to special needs children and their
families. The CSHCN Services Program also assists
children and their families by supporting case management
at DSHS regional offices throughout Texas. |
