Matzke
Park
Since 1986, Be An Angel has supported children that
are multiply impaired or profoundly deaf within Houston
and the surrounding areas. Twenty years ago, none
of the wheelchair-bound students could participate
in recess with the other children. With one of the
first major projects Be An Angel endeavored was the
building of barrier-free playgrounds allowing all
of the students to play together with everyone having
a good time! Friendships developed, as well, between
children who otherwise would not have had any contact.
The awakening power of children is revealed when
we are now able to watch, as children who had never
been on a playground in their lives, were suddenly
able to swing, enjoy a clatter bridge and slide down
slides. Although many of the multiply handicapped
students that we assist cannot speak, their joy speaks
volumes in their eyes and happy faces. They are no
longer forced to sit on the concrete walkway and
watch other children play.
Barrier free playground projects have been an enormous
success and have exceeded all of our expectations
in terms of its benefits to the children. It allots
for increased mobility, which in turn is an excellent
way for the ongoing development needed that their
immobile bodies require.Pct.4, Commissioner Eversole, ABCS and the Triggers
Cricket Club have contributed $434,352 worth of materials
and labor to turn Matzke Park into a family friendly
facility. The 19 acre park is equipped with two soccer
fields, a cricket field, a butterfly garden, asphalt
walking trail, and restrooms. Children are the heart and soul of humanity – they
represent all that is good within us. Be An Angel
believes that no child should be denied the opportunity
to experience life at their fullest potential. By
bringing together the community this project will
not only serve all families and children alike but
will allow us to shine as a caring, committed and
compassionate support system building what will be
the Greater Houston Area’s largest barrier-free
playground.A lofty objective? Yes! But with your help, we can
accomplish this venture. We anticipate ordering the
equipment in Spring of 2008 and completing the build
out in June or early July.
